As Labour fights to deliver the strongest set of workers’ rights in a generation, the Tories and Lib Dems have reunited to try and block it — just like they did in the Coalition years.
In Parliament, Conservative and Liberal Democrat peers have joined forces to weaken Labour’s Employment Rights Bill, a Bill built to give working people stronger protections, fair pay, and job security.
Tories and Lib Dems: Not on Your Side
In the House of Lords, Tory and Lib Dem peers voted together to water down key protections in the Bill by:
- Turning guaranteed-hours contracts into a weak ‘right to request’
- Letting employers cancel shifts without compensation if they give 48 hours’ notice
- Scrapping day-one protection from unfair dismissal
With over 48,000 people in London on zero-hours contracts, these changes risk keeping thousands in insecure work.
Reform UK: Saying One Thing, Voting Another
Reform UK MPs voted against the Bill at every opportunity, despite claiming to support working people. When it mattered, they sided with bad employers and blocked stronger protections.
Labour: Backing Working People
Only Labour is on the side of working people. Labour’s Employment Rights Bill will:
- Ban exploitative zero-hours contracts
- End fire and rehire
- Guarantee day-one rights at work
- Secure tips for staff
- Deliver fair pay, job security, and dignity in the workplace
While others are busy protecting loopholes, Labour is delivering the New Deal for Working People – and making sure work pays.
